Hardened Ground Shafting

The precision of shafting is determined by the tolerances. Tolerances can be defined as the maximum allowed deviation from the nominal diameter. It determines the accuracy, exactness, and how closely the dimensions of the shafting conforms to the stated dimensions.

For example, a shaft diameter may be stated as 8.000 mm +0/-0.008mm which would mean that the diameter can be anywhere from 7.992 to 8.000mm. A more precise version of this shaft would be one with a diameter of 8.000mm +0/-0.003mm, which could also be represented as 7.997 to 8.000mm.

All shafting has tolerances, and the correct tolerances need to be determined for all precision applications. For example, ordinary brass, aluminium or stainless steel rod as supplied by hobby stores does not have very close tolerances and therefore it is unsuitable for use with precision bearings. You may be lucky and find a piece of such rod that works well with a bearing, but the next piece may be too tight or too loose and cause damage to the bearing.

For all precision applications you should use precision ground shafting to the correct tolerances for your application. Bearing suppliers usually supply shafting to tolerances suitable to precision bearings, but these same tolerances my be unsuitable for other applications. The exact requirements of your application should be determined by the manufacturer of the equipment or by an engineer. Bearing suppliers should be able to advise suitability of tolerances for shafting to suit their bearings.

Useful information about precision ground shafting is available in the links below and to the right of this page.

Hardened Ground Shafting

In many precision applications it is important to use a sufficiently precise shaft. Applications involving the use of precision bearings require very precise shafting since the standard tolerances on bearing bores up to 30 mm are +0.000/-0.010. A suitable shaft tolerance should therefore be selected to achieve the desired fit.

Shafting tolerances are usually listed in the specifications for each type.
